Critique

"It is always a particular honour to judge a Top dog event for it gives the breed the opportunity to parade beautiful animals, and of course the judge to assess the best against their peers. It is no secret that I like Rottweilers; they combine power, nobility and elegance, and I had the pleasure of examining some lovely ones today. The exhibits had been chosen to represent eleven participating Rottweiller clubs. Each club sets its own criteria for choosing their representatives. These differ according to the club, and thus gave me a wider spectrum of the breed to judge rather than just the current top winners. The competition requires the dogs to be judged one against one within their sex, one being eliminated each time until I arrived at a Best Dog and later a Best Bitch from which of course the Top Dog was chosen. There was also an award for the best of the first round losers though, I think, given the standard perhaps Best of the Rest would have been a more appropriate title. After the judging and the presentation of the trophies several activities for charity were held, compared by the charming Brian Hindley, The Rottweiler owners proved to be as generous as they were hospitable and around £1000 was raised for Rottweiler Welfare. The meal was very pleasant and the subsequent disco proved that all there knew how to enjoy themselves. I was most appreciative of the hospitality shown to my wife and me and I was very pleased to be part of such a delightful event. Now to my winners; to great applause from the knowledgeable and glamorously dressed audience the Dog of the Year 2005 was Alan Rekert and Karen Davies' bitch Newgen Jakaana JW. Striking and elegant both standing and moving she has so much quality. At just over two years old she is maturing well and she has strength in skull without losing her femininity. She has a lovely arched neck set into sound well laid shoulders with a blade of correct length and clean lines in withers. Her body is powerful and well ribbed, with strength in loin and her correct construction allowed her to move with effortless grace and power, despite the restrictions of an indoor venue. And so well handled. Runner Up Dog of the Year was Miss Purchase' 19 month old dog Pretohawk Too Hot To Handle JW. This young dog abounds in quality and has a super outline. He is so true in construction that no matter how he is moved or presented he automatically stands perfectly balanced and a delight to judge. His angles are correct fore and aft so he moves just as he looks true and positive. Though he is still young he must have a great future The Best Loser was Topham and Maltas' CH Fernwood Zilla, so typical of the breed and so feminine. Correct in proportions and balance she got better and better as the competition progressed"
